Union Jack redesign research

Brief

As Scotland will be voting for independence in September 2014, there is a potential that the Union Jack needs re-designing without the St Andrews flag influence.

Evolution or Revolution

After thinking about this brief for a while, I've come to the conclusion that there is no way of successfully completing this brief as the audience is the entirety of Britain and more. The best way to go about it is to create something that is interesting and stands for what Britain is about today.
From a design perspective it is going to be more interesting to approach the redesign in a revolutionary manner rather than evolutionary. However, in reality, I could never see this happening as it would abandon all oh England's history and heritage, it would be unrecognisable and people would  be less likely to accept it. Realistically, the redesign needs to be evolutionary, building on the unions roots and coming back stronger.

There may be something in the county flags of england, wales and ireland that could be used to communicate a unity of the three

The Union Jack in popular culture

Quite an important consideration for this brief is that the flag plays an important role in popular culture, being reproduced on clothing and accessories.

Accompanying Brands
To get a better idea of what aesthetics are popular amongst the general public of England it is important to look into the brands that are the biggest
